My Fitness Journey

One of my greatest passions since early adulthood has been health & fitness. I’ve always enjoyed enthusiastically sharing my knowledge and helping people. Had I followed my passions earlier, I may have ended up the teaching profession, but instead, I ended up in sales. At least as a sales/store manager, I was able to educate/train employees, which was one of the few things I enjoyed during that 22-year career.

In 2002, I was burned out on sales and went into personal training full time. From the outside, it seemed like the perfect alignment of my passion and profession. I learned very quickly that it was nothing more than a sales job. Gyms only cared about the bottom line, not their clients. That made me a little jaded. Through hard work, I gained a reputation as an elite trainer that got results!

In 2003, I joined Team Beachbody (The P90X folks) and started coaching, and have continued to do so ever since.

From 2005-2008 I was 100% self-employed (Elite Fitness), and I was training clients in-home exclusively. I was in the zone! During the final 18 months of my business, I switched gears, and I went from putting my clients through brutal workouts to healing them with therapeutic exercise. My new routines were designed to eliminate musculoskeletal system disparities and postural dysfunctions, resulting in “Pain-Free Living.” It was perfect! My clients loved it and saw results! Then, in 2007-2008 when the economy crashed, people were forced to make financial choices, so I found my way back into the workforce. However, I maintained my personal training certification, and I’ve continued training clients part-time over the years.

Fast forward to the Fall of 2017: I became Primal Health Coach via the Primal Health Coach Certification Program, and I was blown away! As a Primal Health Coach, I’m now able to serve new clients at a higher level than I ever dreamed possible.

I also started providing personal training again, with a primary focus on pain-free workouts and fixing asymmetries, as well as personal training for general health, fitness, and athletic performance. For more details on how I can help you, click on the links below:

My Personal Journey

As I stated above, one of my greatest passions since early adulthood has been health & fitness. Yet I can honestly say that my fitness levels have had its fair share of ups and downs over the last 35 years.

My generation grew up playing outside in the woods, playing sports, and we were generally quite active. As a result, I was lean and strong. When I started working, my jobs were always very physical, so I stayed fit until I was about 30 years old.

A progressive shoulder injury ultimately led me to a sales career. I still ate the same, but I was not active, so my weight skyrocketed. It happened so fast that I ended up with foot, ankle, knee, hip, and lower back issues. I eventually found a way to correct my shoulder issue that had gotten progressively worse for nearly 4 years. With that taken care of, I was able to start working out again. I tightened up my diet, and I eventually achieved my goals.

In January 2009, I discovered The Primal Blueprint. This was the greatest concept I’d ever come across, and it took my health and fitness to a new level.

In September 2013, I set three 1-rep max (1RM) records:

Deep Back Squat: 385 pounds
Deadlift: 480 pounds
Weighted Dips: 315 (180 BW + three 45 pound plates)

This is what I looked like back then... at 180 pounds.

After some major life challenges, I suffered from depression and emotional eating. By May 2015 I had lost a lot of my strength gains and some muscle mass, but I had ballooned up to 220 pounds. At this point I had enough. In July 2015 I moved from Hamilton New Jersey to Portland Oregon, and that proved to be one of the best things I had ever done. Here is what I looked like then at 200 pounds (already down 20 pounds mind you). I don’t know what more terrifying, how awful I look, or how hideous that shirt is? LOL

Since moving to Portland I have been working out, I’ve been extremely active, and I got back on track I also noticed that I was gradually finding myself adhering more and more to The Primal Blueprint Laws. By November 2016, I had something that I never had my entire life: 6-pack abs… at the age of 53!

I did not have a gym membership. I did not spend hours working out (overtraining). I didn’t do any cardio other than casual walking and hiking. I did not starve myself. I did not count or restrict calories. I love to eat, and I eat a lot! I was a fat storing machine, but I reprogrammed my genes and transformed into a fat burning beast by:

  • Eating Primally
  • Moving frequently
  • Performing a variety of bodyweight exercises
  • Sprinting occasionally

I’ve shared all of this to let you know that I’m really just an average guy. I’m not genetically gifted, I don’t have the skinny gene, and if I can do this, so can you! I’d love to help you with that.

In closing, I’ve overcome many obstacles: physical issues, chronic pain, rapid weight gain, depression, and emotional eating. I’m empathetic, and I’m sure I can help you to overcome your obstacles as well. I vast experience as a coach & personal trainer, and I am confident that I can help you to achieve your health and fitness goals as a Health Coach!

My Business Journey
I’m adding this section for a couple of reasons: first and foremost, Primal Health Coaching and Training is my business. Secondly, I do make money from this website in other ways as well, which I will cover below. But first, a little history.

Earlier in my career, I had been involved with a few Network Marketing Companies. This was pre-Internet, so I had to do all of the networking in person or on the phone. That, plus annoy the hell out of friends and family. Although I achieved a modest degree of success, Network Marketing was just not my jam. However, via network marketing I was introduced to all of the success principles that are applicable to every type of business, so they were all worthwhile ventures.

My first online business venture was an international hot sauce company called Screamin Demon Fiery Foods. I ran the company from 2001 – 2014. It was here that I developed my Web Development, SEO/SEM, and Digital Marketing Skills. I also learned how to incorporate Affiliate Marketing into the mix, providing yet another income stream.

Elite Fitness, which I covered in My Fitness Journey, was my second business venture. In addition to an online presence, I also marketed my business in the real world: cold calling, meet-ups, flyers, shaking hands & kissing babies, etc.

RickStype.com is my newest venture, with the primary focus on health coaching services, and wellness.

In Addition to Health Coaching

I’ve partnered up with an amazing company that offers a complete line of 100% certified ToxicFree®, organic and wildcrafted daily-use products. Since the primary focus of rickstype.com is health & wellness, these products fit perfectly, as they provide me with yet another way to help people to achieve optimal health in addition to providing health coaching & consulting services.

Click on the Live Toxic Free and you’ll see why I had to get involved. I was appalled by what I had learned, and it is my duty to share it with you here.

For those of you that not only want to experience the benefits of using 100% certified ToxicFree®, organic products but would also like to earn additional income, I’ve added a Work From Home page that covers the many benefits of starting a new business.

Full disclosure, I also generate additional income via Affiliate Marketing. Click the link for full details.
